On behalf of the Historical Society I want to thank the Harvard Fire Department for saving our building and all the community volunteers who saved our collection of artifacts and furniture during the fire this week. We are so grateful to the Harvard firemen and to the surrounding towns who sent their firefighters—they made what Peter Warren called “a phenomenal stop.” We are moved by the tremendous outpouring of help, from professionals who immediately accommodated us, to the volunteers who carried things out of the building and then into a storage trailer, to the fireman’s wife who sent down sandwiches. All day people came by to ask what they could do. We feel lucky—lucky to still have our beautiful building and our artifacts from Harvard’s past and lucky to have a community of such caring and competent people.
