We are shocked and outraged at the clear-cutting done by the Mace family and Flagg Tree Removal Service on Bare Hill Pond. We are equally outraged by the Conservation Commission’s decision to impose such a lenient penalty as a doubled permit fee and the direction to plant a mere three trees.
This decision to allow clear-cutting poses a threat to the ecological foundation of this fragile environment. Pond residents are upset about the additional noise, light glare, and unsightly deforestation of a once pristine, natural, panoramic view.
We question why such a tolerant stance was taken and what sort of precedent this sets to other waterfront homeowners. The message is clear: do whatever you wish and ask forgiveness later. One need only look at surrounding homes to see that land-clearing is not an acceptable practice. All homeowners are duty-bound to check with the authorities before undertaking major construction or significant changes to property no matter where one lives. Ignorance is never an excuse.
It is now up to the commission to take a strong stance that protects our beautiful environment from further damage and exploitation. To do anything less would only serve to destroy this wonderful resource so dear to all of us.
