With the campaigning over and the votes counted, the contested races for Board of Selectmen and School Committee were settled. The candidates who said they stood for change—Leo Blair, Ron Ricci, and Peter Warren—walked away the winners of the open slots on the Board of Selectmen; Keith Cheveralls and Virginia Justicz will fill the two three-year seats on the School Committee.
Wednesday Warren said he’s aware that he’ll be starting his new job with the daunting task of revising the budget. “I don’t look forward to what’s going to have to happen next,” he said.
Cheveralls said in an interview on Wednesday that he was filled with “gratitude and humility that the town saw fit to elect me.” He praised the other candidates, saying the race had been fair and dignified.
In response to a question about the failure of the override, Cheveralls said he did not wish to speculate on why it did not pass, but noted, “it’s probably not the most ideal circumstance” for a new school board member to be facing.
Justicz also commenting Wednesday said, “I’m pleased that the voters validated my efforts and that I can continue my work on the school board.” She said she is looking forward to working with the new board members and getting accustomed to the new team.
When asked about the failure of the override, Justicz acknowledged the challenge facing the School Committee, saying, “We have our work cut out for us. The town is now operating without a budget [for next year].”
