The Westford man who detonated a homemade explosive at the Harvard Sportsmen’s Club the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 22, will be given a summons to appear in Ayer District Court within the next few days, according to Boxborough police detective Robert Romilly Jr. The man will be charged with two misdemeanors.
The suspect did not have a motive when he lobbed the explosive in the vicinity of other club members, Romilly explained, but he did use bad judgment. Because he does not think that the man is a threat to the wellbeing of others at this time, he added, he chose to issue a summons rather than arrest him and take him into custody.
“A summons serves the same purpose [as an arrest],” Romilly said. “In the end it’s the same thing: they just aren’t taken into custody immediately.”
The suspect’s name will be a matter of public record after the magistrate’s hearing, which is scheduled for next month.
