st week I attended a meeting called by the Devens Committee to interview four Harvard candidates for selectmen: Peter Warren, Marie Sobalvarro, Ron Ricci, and Leo Blair.
The moderator’s questions quickly got around to the issue of Devens disposition. What surprised me was that Peter Warren, Ron Ricci, and Leo Blair all agreed that Harvard’s vote against scenario 2B was unfair and wrong. Each of these candidates appealed to the Devens residents by telling them what they were hoping to hear. It was outright political pandering. I recall Leo Blair saying he was ashamed of Harvard’s greed.
During the meeting, Marie Sobalvarro answered questions addressed to her with intelligence, grace, and a good measure of courage. Marie told it the way it really is. She acted in the fine tradition of a good selectman with no axe to grind. I was proud of Marie, and she will surely get my vote at town election.
