My husband graduated from Bromfield in 1981. His parents, George and Esther Granville, had moved to Harvard for the quality of the school system. Last year, after living in California for 10 years, we bought the old Pieters estate on Bolton Road for the very same reason—the quality of the schools for our three boys.
I’ve been watching from the sidelines during the past year, trying to figure out how this town works. Thanks to Leo Blair, whom I met through coaching in HAA, I am starting to understand the process and I have been inspired to get involved. There was a lot of talk last night at the debates about the need for more of Harvard’s citizens to step up and volunteer, and I couldn’t agree more. The key is that we need people on the Board of Selectmen, like Leo, who will make it their business to reach out to people like me and bring us into the process. Recently, I joined the HAA soccer board because someone thought I could add value and asked me to join. It brings a great feeling of community and empowerment to participate in the running of your town’s programs and I am looking forward to finding the right committees where my skills can add value.
I know that Leo is committed to a program of outreach to educate Harvard’s citizens on how we can get involved to share our time and skills. I believe with Leo’s brand of leadership and more participation from more volunteers, Harvard has a very bright future.
