Count to 10 next time

March 7, 2008

I offer this response to Scott Kimball’s letter to the editor in last week’s Press:

I’d listen harder to what Scott has to say if he weren’t so testy about it.

He makes a good suggestion about the lights [in the library] being left on perhaps 15 minutes rather than 30 after closing. But then he indulges in a series of swipes, first calling Jeff’s [Harris] response “nonsense.” And let me get this straight: as a selectman he decided ahead of time that a tour of the new library would be a “dog-and-pony show?” That’s just so cynical. Did he not want to be a fully informed selectman? Or was he just that incurious about the most important town project in years?

And then he added indignantly that he refused to “drink the Kool-Aid some of our elected officials help themselves to.” Whoah. His image of my friend Mary Wilson in Jim Jones’ dark aviator glasses dispensing poison does not endear him to anyone, nor does it set the stage for a reasoned discussion of the simple point he was trying to make.

I mean, maybe he should count to 10 before sending off a letter like that, or if it still looks good to him, maybe have his wife read it or something.
