The Bromfield girls basketball team finished the regular season with an emotional win, and now looks to advance into the postseason.
Last Friday night the Trojans took on a tough Whitinsville Christian team. Missing three players to the flu, the Crusaders hoped to contain the Trojans’ dynamic duo of seniors Catherine Johnson and Lindsey Burke.
The Crusaders started the first half in a triangle-and-two defense, playing man-to-man on Burke and Johnson and a zone defense on the remaining players. This defense left the offensive boards wide open, resulting in seven offensive rebounds by Burke and two for improving junior Emily Reedich in the first half.
Whitinsville Christian found itself with a one-point advantage, 28–27, heading into the half, after making four straight free throws and scoring a field goal in the closing seconds. Known for their foul shooting, the Crusaders closed the half 15 of 16 from the line and 80 percent on the game. Committing 11 fouls in the first half alone, the Trojans came out of halftime aiming to keep Whitinsville Christian off the foul line.
The Trojans’ dismal shooting night continued, finishing with a field goal percentage of just 28 and scoring only nine points in the third quarter. Luckily, the defense stepped up, holding Whitinsville Christian to just five third-quarter points.
The Trojans held the lead, winning 48–42. Burke finished with 18 points, 18 rebounds, and three steals in a dominating performance. Reedich and senior Henley Siegrist had seven and eight points, respectively, both contributing crucial free throws in the final minutes of the game. Johnson finished with seven points and seven rebounds, junior Robin Neschke earned six points and senior Rosie Gatto had two points. Sophomore Maggie Cochrane, junior Kelly Thurston, and senior Casey Silver also contributed to the win.
The Trojan women began the postseason on Wednesday at home against University Park. Bromfield secured the seventh seed position with a 16–4 record. They hope to advance to the next round against Quabog, the second seed, or Littleton, which the Trojans have defeated twice already this season.
“We’ve had a great season but what we’ve really been working toward is the playoffs,” said Siegrist.
Led by Coach Tom Hill, the Trojans hope to make a big impact in this year’s Division 3 tournament.
