It was about succession planning

December 21, 2007

I couldn’t let your story on my resignation pass without one correction. Our CEO at Physical Sciences, Inc., retired, he did not resign. His retirement was part of a 10-year succession plan that also transformed the company from one owned by a few founders to one owned by all its employees through a stock ownership trust and managed by the next generation of leadership. With this succession comes a significant obligation to our 175 employee-stockholders that does not enable me to continue to work for the town as I have been able to do in the past.

In the last few months I have grown increasingly uncomfortable with my ability to participate and influence events on the Board of Selectmen. With the board about to undertake a number of long-range planning activities, I felt it was the appropriate time for me to allow someone with the ability to address these issues to take them up. My resignation now enables someone to run for the balance of my term with the least amount of impact on board operations.

I want to thank all those with whom I worked over the last few years, as well as the people of the town of Harvard, for enabling me to serve the town, and to apologize for my premature departure from the obligations of office with which you entrusted me.
