Town Caucus Set for February 7
With the annual town election set for April 1, 2008, the selectmen voted to set the date of Saturday, Feb. 7, for the town caucus, which will take place at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall meeting room. According to Town Clerk Janet Vellante, all resignations or notifications of vacancies must be turned in at Town Hall by Monday, Jan. 14. Currently, there are four vacancies on elected boards: a one-year term on the Community Preservation Committee; a one-year term on the Park and Recreation Commission; a one-year term on the School Committee, and a one-year term with the Warner Free Lecture Society Trustees.
Safe Routes to School Under Consideration
The selectmen reviewed information about the Safe Routes to School program, a federal program that promotes walking and biking to school, improves pedestrian safety, and reduces fuel consumption and air pollution. Through the program, towns can be eligible for funds for education and for infrastructure projects that facilitate safe access to schools. Local towns already participating in the “Safe Routes” program include Ashby, Ayer, and Fitchburg. Town Administrator Tim Bragan said he will be completing a survey distributed by the Montachusett Regional Planning Commission demonstrating the town’s interest in the program, with the ultimate goal of seeking funds from the program in the future.
Hugh Silk Resigns from Shaker Village 40B Ad Hoc Committee
The selectmen accepted the resignation of Hugh Silk from the Shaker Village 40B Ad Hoc Committee. In his letter of resignation, Silk cited the time commitment as his reason for leaving.
Deborah Thomson Appointed to Community Preservation Committee
The selectmen voted unanimously to appoint Poor Farm Road resident Deborah Thomson to the Community Preservation Committee.
