I was recently sent a copy of your May 18, 2007 issue, which included an article about the boathouse. My husband and I lived in Harvard for 25 years and owned the boathouse, yet there was not one mention of our name in your article. In fact, we were the ones who donated the boathouse to the town because vandals continually broke the windows; every time we repaired them they were broken again.
We loved that boathouse and used to have wonderful parties in it. We would run an electrical cord from our house down the hill to the boathouse, where a friend had a generator so we could have music to dance with on the beautiful ballroom floor. I even had my Girl Scouts meet there for meetings.
To set the record straight, our house was the summer house on the Fiske Warren estate and was owned by Marjory Whitman. We bought it and winterized it and added on to the house. We even brought back the tennis court that was overgrown with trees. We also built a barn for our daughter’s horse.
When we first moved to Harvard there were 1,200 people in town, one post office, and a general store. Everyone knew everyone—our dear friends the Does, Donaldsons, Harrises, Dunlaps, and von Loeseckes all enjoyed our boathouse and tennis parties.
My reason for writing is I feel my husband Alexis and I are owed an apology for totally ignoring our ownership of the boat house.
I still keep up my friendships in Harvard, as I loved Harvard.
