The Bromfield men’s and women’s crew teams raced against a strong lineup of more than 10 private and public schools at the Founder’s Day Regatta held Sunday, May 6, on Lake Waramaug in Washington, Connecticut. A total of 280 boats and 1,400 athletes participated and faced strong head winds at the take-off point, as well as strong wind gusts throughout the race day.
Bromfield entered three varsity boats in both the girls’ and boys’ races. The girls’ first varsity boat, composed of coxswain Ellie Kendall and rowers Georgia Gunner, Maggie Cochrane, Anni Leirhaus, and Ally Cohen, was fifth in its heat with a time of 6:47:1. Hillary Rowse coxed the girls’ second varsity boat through three different races during the day (two heats and the petite final) to a final time of 6:14.2 with fellow rowers Robin Neschke, Taylor Cardosi, Margaux Holley, and Mary Beth Childs. The girls’ varsity three boat with Mariah Katz at cox and Maggie Schulz, Alli Bollman, Kate Lee, and Maddie Moberly achieved third place in its heat with a time of 6:34.1.
The boys’ first varsity boat, with Christi Devlin at cox and Dan Childs, Clarke Smith, Jesse Fox, and Darren Hartig rowing, finished sixth in its heat with a time of 6:09.4. Also racing were Mike Griffith, Garrett Cosgrave, Jordan Schnipke, and Chris Martin with Katie Papazian at cox in the boys’ varsity two boat. They achieved a time of 5:35.8 for fifth place in their heat. The boys’ varsity three boat, manned by Clarke Jacobson, Mike Child, Scott Myslinksi, and Conor Finnegan with Franny Minervini at cox, finished fourth in its heat with a time of 6:21.0.
The coaches and crew team noted the depth and strength of the competition. “The only way to improve is to go up against the best,” Coach Pat Scott said. “And these teams are among the best.”
“This weekend was a real test for how the girls were going to attack their personal processes against stronger competition than what we’ve raced in the past,” said Coach David Fraumano, adding, “Results come from the development of this process and we’re taking a lot of pride in our preparations.”
Bromfield will compete again Saturday, May 12, beginning at approximately 12:30 p.m. at Bare Hill Pond against Middlesex; Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols; and Cambridge Rindge and Latin. The town is welcome to attend the meet.
