The Bromfield men’s and women’s crew teams swept most of the races at the Charles River Regatta hosted by the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School Saturday, May 19. The competition also included high school teams from Waynflete and Yarmouth, Maine. Although Saturday was rainy, the 1,250-meter course was calm with little of the wind gusts the racers faced in prior weeks. It was the first competition for many of the boys’ and girls’ novice boats this season.
Bromfield entered three varsity boys’ boats as well as two novice boats in the girls’ races and four novice boats in the boys’ races. The girls’ novice boats—comprised of cox Rita Fagen, and rowers Erica Marksteiner, Emma Williams, Kate Lee, Mary Egan, Katja Lierhaus, Molly Papazian, Jillian Saydah, and MacKenzie Grant—placed first in each of their races with times of 4:54.2 and 5:03.5.
Matt Jones coxed the boys’ first novice boat to a first-place finish with a final time of 4:23 with fellow rowers David Choi, Jon Olsson, Kendall Cotton, and Ian Christie. The boys’ novice two and three boats with Aly Marteney and Matt Jones at cox and rowers Scott Blackwell, Nikko Koetsch, Jack Michaels, Sam Ginouves, Emma Williams, Sam Carlson, Avery Berryman, and Taylor LeBlanc achieved second and third places in their heat with times of 4:52 and 5:37 respectively.
The boys’ first varsity boat with Katie Papazian at cox and Jordan Schnipke, Mike Griffeth, Clarke Smith, and Darren Hartig rowing, finished first in their race with a time of 4:12. Also racing were Garrett Cosgrave, Chris Martin, Danny Child, and Jesse Fox, with Christie Devlin at cox in the boys’ varsity two boat. They achieved a time of 4:18 for first place in their meet. The boys’ varsity three boat, manned by Clarke Jacobson, Mike Child, Scott Myslinksi, and Connor Finnegan, with Franny Minervini at cox, finished first with a time of 4:29.
Coach David Fraumano held the varsity girls’ boats back from this meet while they prepare to race in an eight-boat at the Massachusetts Public School Racing Association state championships next weekend. While both the boys’ and girls’ teams received invitations to the New England Regionals based on their race times and performances over the past six weeks of the spring season, the coaches are choosing to focus the teams’ efforts on working together in larger boat configurations (eight seats instead of four) with the hope of achieving greater results at the state championships, which will be held on the Merrimack River in Lowell Sunday, May 27.
