The April 3 election will be one of the most important elections this town has seen in a generation. A significant change in the direction of our town is at stake. There are four candidates for two openings on the Board of Selectman. I wish to share my thoughts with you.
Lucy Wallace is running for reelection to the board. I was a selectman with Lucy and she is the most qualified selectman serving. She is the only selectman working full time as selectman. Lucy takes on the difficult projects other selectmen ignore and she is available to all citizens of the town. Even when she is in the minority on the board she never buckles, and that was never more true than when Lucy helped defeat question 2B.
To assure real progress for our town we need to elect Tim Clark, too. He brings integrity, intelligence, and an impressive record of service to the town. His election to the board will break the stalemate that cripples the Board of Selectmen, and Tim has the energy and the enthusiasm to explore all options at Devens. The development of Fort Devens was intended to benefit Harvard and the surrounding communities, and Tim will fight for our interests.
I believe it is important not to overlook that their two opponents both promoted and worked hard to pass the terribly flawed 2B scenario. Fortunately, voters at Town Meeting and at the elections overwhelmingly rejected this fear campaign as a bad deal for Harvard. How do they reconcile their efforts today? Good leaders reject fear as a campaign tactic.
I have lived here for over 40 years. I believe that our town is at a critical crossroads and we need to support two people we can trust. We need to return the leadership of our town back into the voters’ hands, where it belongs.
