There is a really great cartoon in the January 12 issue of the Harvard Press. It depicts the pleasures of motorists enjoying that brilliant piece of traffic engineering—the four-way stop in the town center. It should have been captioned: “After you, Alphonse.” “No, no, after you, Gaston.” Whoever is in charge, and one wonders if anyone is, should stop shuffling stop signs, and hire an expensive contractor to put up a real red, amber, and green traffic light with embedded sensors to direct it when to change. After all, we can certainly afford it when you consider the new library only wants (and will, no doubt, get) a mere $200,000 in operating costs. A lot more people use the roads in the town center than use the library.
