The Bromfield boys indoor track team began a new season at 9 a.m. Saturday, January 6, running against Lunenburg and Oakmont Regional High Schools. While some individuals turned in impressive times, the Trojans came in in last place at the meet.
Oakmont defeated Bromfield by a score of 70–21, and Lunenberg won 55–36.
Junior Alex Calderwood ran the two-mile event in 11:48, a performance that earned him first place against Lunenburg and second place against Oakmont. Senior Kevin Winter finished only two seconds behind his teammate, good for a second place against Lunenburg and third place against Oakmont.
The Trojan’s most impressive event of the meet was the 55-meter hurdle. Against Lunenburg, junior Connor Garrison finished first with a time of 9.6 seconds. Sophomores Walker Calkins (10.2 seconds) and Nick Cleary (10.7 seconds) finished second and third respectively to complete a sweep of the event.
In the one-mile race, sophomores Ben Waldman and Sam Dorward took first and second against both opponents with times of 5:11 and 5:15, respectively.
Dorward also finished in first place against Lunenburg and Oakmont in the 1,000-meter event, with a time of 3:4.
“I ran myself to exhaustion for the sake of the [Bromfield] boys’ track team,” he said.
Seventh-grader Nathanial Alexander also gave a notable performance. He finished second in the 55-meter race with a time of 7.5 seconds and third in the 300-meter event with a time of 44 seconds.
Winter, a team captain, said that the team put forth a “really good effort” for the meet in spite of the results. He said, “a lot of people are significantly improving even though it is relatively early in the season.”
