Friday, December 15, the Bromfield girls varsity basketball team earned their first win of the season, beating the Narragansett High School Warriors by a score of 58 – 32.
After experiencing two losses against tough Hopedale and Lunenburg teams, the girls put on a good show for the home crowd. Junior Catherine Johnson led the team with 18 points and four steals. Another junior, Lindsey Burke, scored ten points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Senior co-captain Lydia Maurer scored eight points and junior Rosie Gatto added seven. Junior Henley Siegrist added five points and had five rebounds as well. Bromfield’s other co-captain, senior Rebecca Reusch, scored twice for four points, as did sophomore Kelly Thurston. Sophomore Robin Neschke scored the remaining two.
Coach Tom Hill said, “It was a team effort: a lot of people did a lot of good things tonight.”
The Trojans’ play was characterized by their full-court pressure defense that lead to multiple Narragansett turnovers and Bromfield layups. Hill noted that the “press worked very well.” At one point midway through the second half, Johnson picked off an opponent’s pass and took it down court for two of her 18 points.
Late in the second half the crowd grew noisy after Reusch scored a hook-shot basket. From then on the crowd relentlessly cheered until the final buzzer.
The Trojans will play once over the holiday break next Wednesday, December 27 at 7 p.m. at Clinton High School.
