There was a front page story in the November 24th issue of the Harvard Press in which Mr. Nota, the new Transfer Station manager, was quoted as saying he was NOT going to do away with “take it or leave it.” Actually, he claimed he was going to make it better than ever. The FACT is, he has effectively done away with it. He parks OUR front end loader so that it makes it difficult to park and use “take it or leave it,” but no matter, he periodically loads the machine with the contents of “take it or leave it” and throws them into a dumpster. So there is nothing to take. And he would prefer you put anything you would like to leave right into the loader’s scoop to save him the trouble.
In addition, he was quoted as saying he was NOT going to do away with the metal pile. The fact of the matter is that he HAS DONE AWAY with the metal pile entirely.
As I said before, he is absolutely determined to do away with recycling. If it weren’t for the Massachusetts mandates, no doubt the plastic, paper, glass, and can dumpsters would be a thing of the past.
Anyway, what can we do about it?
When people are running for selectman, ask if they are for or against restoring the transfer station to its former status—where recycling ruled—and vote accordingly.
You can easily find them for questioning, because at election time, they will be standing in front of the sign dedicating the transfer station to John Gray—Mr. Recycle himself. There’s a mockery for you.
Since the sticker fees bring in close to $6,000 a week, I think it is time for a complete public accounting for the tranfer station costs.
