Coming off their spectacular state championship season, Bromfield cross country runners Emily Jones and Eliza Ives traveled to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx to compete Saturday in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championship Northeast Regional. Jones, a sophomore, finished ninth in the race with a time of 18:03.9 on the 3.1-mile course. Ives, a senior, came in 34th, putting up a time of 18:51.6.

According to coach Henry Phelan, the girls are the first Bromfield runners to compete in this race since Ari Lambie won the race as a senior in 2002. Jones was the second sophomore to cross the finish line while Ives finished sixth among runners from New England.

With her top ten finish, Jones qualified for the National Championships December 9. The race will be held in Balboa Park in San Diego, California. Phelan said, “it’s a good experience as a sophomore” and added that Jones would be “doing the same old stuff” to prepare for the race. One change, however: Jones will be “over-dressing” to prepare for the warmer temperatures on the West Coast.
