Mothers are like buttons—they hold everything together, even in these times.
A mom we once knew—and for as long as we knew her—kept a pretty little enamel box on her dresser. Holding a few whatnots and adorned with images of colorful buttons, the box’s inscription read, “Mothers are like buttons—they hold everything together.”
As Mother’s Day approaches, those words may well resonate with many of us, but perhaps with an overtone of wistfulness. Whether the pandemic is hampering the traditional family gathering, or showing us just how capable a mom is of sustaining the family when the kids are home all day, every day, we can all probably find a way to express our appreciation for the mother figures in our lives. We may not be spending Sunday exactly as we had planned, but as mom might have told us,“Keep your eye on the doughnut, not on the hole.”
Happy Mother’s Day, everyone.
