This year’s Bromfield-North Middlesex Alpine ski team debuts Jan. 14 in a giant slalom event at the Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Westford. The competition season has been delayed due to a lack of snow, but the skiers have had over a month of practice on the slopes, and Coach Ray McCarthy is optimistic about the team’s prospects.
McCarthy, who is returning for his fourth year of coaching, said this year’s team looks strong, with a number of “top-notch” varsity athletes returning and a promising group of junior varsity and rookie skiers adding depth. Though the competition season was delayed, he said the team has been working out on snow at the Wachusett Mountain Ski Area since Nov. 29.
“Overall we continue to improve our quality and depth and position ourselves well for continued success this season and beyond,” McCarthy wrote in an email to the Press. He added that he expects both teams to rank high in the league and for several individual athletes to qualify for the Alpine state championships sponsored by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.
In 2021, the girls went 3-2 in the Mass Bay West Ski League, putting the team third behind Newton South High School and Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. The boys had a record of 4-1, falling to Westford Academy. Belmont High School opted out of competition due to COVID-19 concerns.
This year Bromfield-North Middlesex will face teams from Westford Academy, Tyngsborough High School/Groton-Dunstable Regional High School, Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, Chelmsford High School, Belmont High School, Newton South High School, and Central Catholic High School.
Among this year’s top returners are four league all-stars: Junior Imogen Slavin from Bromfield and sophomore Maddie Rausch from North Middlesex on the girls side and junior Noah Bagley from North Middlesex and sophomore Oscar Pride from Bromfield on the boys side.
The upcoming season will consist of six races, most of which will be held on Tuesdays at Nashoba, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Three races will be slalom events, and three will be giant slalom.
