Girls dominate, boys lose against Shrewsbury in dual swim meet

Bromfield swimmers and divers competed for the fourth time this season Jan. 10, facing Shrewsbury High School in a dual meet at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. The girls team added to its undefeated record, beating the Colonials 102-74, and the boys team lost 87-83, putting its record at 2-2.

Bromfield athletes swim as part of a mixed-school team with teammates from Littleton High School and Ayer Shirley Regional High School.

The girls had strong performances Monday, with several athletes qualifying for postseason competition. In the 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Ella Bergeron from Littleton was second in a time of 2 minutes, 15.41 seconds and was followed by Ayer Shirley freshman Niamh Fallon in third (2:20.26).

Senior captain Lorelei Folger from Ayer Shirley won the 200 individual medley and qualified for the state swimming championships sponsored by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) with her time of 2:18.87. She also led the field in the 500 freestyle, posting another state-qualifying time and personal record of 5:24.51. Ayer Shirley freshman Gracie Hanss was third in the same event, swimming 6:08.20 to qualify for the league meet.

Junior Sierra Quinty from Ayer Shirley placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.36), and Bromfield junior Lily Tonole was the day’s top diver, scoring a personal best of 244.20 points to qualify for states.

Bromfield eighth-grader Charlotte Miling and Bromfield senior Courtney Clark also qualified for leagues. Miling swam the 200 freestyle in 2:25.79, and Clark posted 2:48.24 in the 200 medley.

The boys team swam a close meet for the second time this season. In December, it came out on top in a meet against the Advanced Math & Science Academy (AMSA). Coming into the 400-yard freestyle relay—the final event of the day—AMSA was ahead 79-76. Four Bromfield swimmers, junior captain Alex Myles, sophomore Ryan Donahoe, freshman Isaac Xu, and freshman Vance Petrossi, were their team’s final chance to turn the score around. Winning the event, the squad did just that, finalizing the score at 86-83. The team also bested Tyngsborough High School and fell to Algonquin Regional High School.

In the meet against Shrewsbury, two Bromfield athletes earned first place, with Bromfield’s Xu swimming the 50 freestyle in 26.34 and junior Jack Babcock posting 1:19.50 in the 100 breaststroke. Both athletes qualified for the league meet.

Bromfield freshman Vance Petrossi was second in both the 200-yard individual medley (2:18.93) and the 100 freestyle (54.12). The first performance qualified him for the MIAA sectional tournament, and the latter put him on the list for leagues.

Coach Sabiha Madraswalla highlighted Bromfield seventh-grader Bowen Clarke’s performance in the 500 freestyle. This was the middle-schooler’s debut in the event, and he placed sixth with a time of 8:43.19, which Madraswalla said was “incredible.”

The teams competed again Jan. 12, in a meet against Westborough High School. Results were not available at press time.
