Girls cross-country team qualifies for states, as does boys team’s Will Squire

The Bromfield girls and boys cross-country teams took on the MIAA Central Division 2 championships this past Saturday at Gardner Municipal Golf Course, where the girls team clinched second place among 26 teams, earning a place at the state meet, while the boys placed ninth among 34 teams.

Senior Tessa McClain placed ninth overall for the girls team, with a time of 20:50 minutes on the 5-kilometer course. Senior Will Squire placed 15th for the boys, with a time of 17:50. Both qualified individually for the state meet. “It’s a very tough course, and I tried not to go out too fast too early, saving enough for a strong finish,” Squire commented the day after his race.

The course was hilly, conditions icy, and the temperature dropped to the mid-30s, setting the stage for a tough race off the starting line. McClain, going into the day battling pneumonia, didn’t know how the race would go, but she knew she had to finish the race against the other 184 athletes to help her team to a top-three finish. “We really pulled together as a team,” said McClain. “Despite the circumstances, we did what we came there to do. On to states!”

The top three teams each earned a spot at the state championships. Squire knew he had to be among the top 15 to make the states, but given the competition, he would have to give his race everything he had to make it.

Parker Charter School, Whitinsville Christian, and Littleton High School were the biggest threats to a top-three finish by the Trojans. The next pack of Bromfield girls, led by junior Hannah Beckman placing 18th, all battled for position across the golf course, passing as many girls as possible with the knowledge that every spot was valuable. The rest of the pack consisted of freshman Molly Squire, who finished 23rd, and junior Helena Justicz, who finished 26th, placing the Bromfield top four among the meet’s top 30, which looked promising for the team overall.

The team’s fifth finisher on Saturday was eighth-grader Marissa Flynn, who placed 37th overall, rounding out the Bromfield girls final meet score at 108 points. She was followed by seventh-grader Emma Squire, 47th, and junior Kasia Ostrowski, 86th.

This Saturday, the girls team and Will Squire will head once again to Gardner Municipal Golf Course to compete in the MIAA Division 2 all-state championships. The girls race is scheduled for 11 a.m., and Squire’s race is at 12:20 p.m.

Molly Squire is a Bromfield freshman and a member of the girls varsity cross-country team.
