It takes a special person to step forward and run for office these days, with the financial challenges facing Massachusetts towns and citizenry alike. Harvard has its unique set of challenges, including the ongoing process to reach consensus on Devens disposition, commercial development on Ayer Road, and the implementation of a sewer system for town center.
The involvement of Harvard’s citizens in town affairs and the passion they bring to issues subject town officials to close scrutiny and often subject them to harsh criticism. Yet some of Harvard’s town officials have served in office for years, stepping up to the plate repeatedly. We applaud those who have come forward to run for office this year, among them 10 incumbents.
Although most positions will be uncontested in the May 4 election, there is an upside to this: most town officials and residents can remain focused on the tasks at hand, instead of diverting energy to political campaigning. This year will be an opportune time for residents to become engaged in some of the issues facing Harvard and support elected officials in moving forward to conclusion on matters that have been before the town for years.
