Friends of the Library book sale, 5/11-5/20

The Friends of the Harvard Public Library will host its main fundraising event of the year—its annual book sale—beginning Friday, May 5, in Volunteers Hall at the Harvard Public Library. All proceeds go to support children’s programs, Friends of the Arts performances, museum passes, and other library services.

  • Preview sale
    Friday, May 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. The preview sale is for Friends members. Harvard residents may join the Friends at the door.
  • Early-bird sale
    Saturday, May 12, from 8 to 9 a.m. For an admission fee of $25 per person, shoppers may enter the sale before it opens to the public.
  • Book sale
    Saturday, May 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the book sale is free starting at 9 a.m. Saturday and will remain so for the additional sales.
  • Additional sale dates
    10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, Saturday, May 19, and Sunday, May 20.

Women veterans and active duty personnel and retirees are invited to the 10th Annual Women Veterans' Conference Saturday, May 19, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Devens Common Center, 31 Andrews Parkway in Devens. The event will include keynote speaker Lila Holley from Camouflaged Sisters LLC, workshops, demos, raffle drawings, and lunch. The Garden Club of Harvard will host its annual plant sale Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Westward Orchards Farm Stand, 178 Mass Ave. A wide variety of perennials, annuals, herbs, vegetables, trees and shrubs, and some rare and special plants will be available, with the majority cultivated in Harvard gardens. All proceeds from the sale support club initiatives, including education grants, outreach, and civic beautification.

The Fort Devens Museum’s Armed Forces Day celebration on Saturday, May 19, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature a special award to three veterans, a guest speaker with a presentation on the Army’s Special Forces units, new displays of military memorabilia, the sale of books and military paraphernalia, raffle prizes, and light refreshments. Come to enjoy conversation with others interested in military and local history.  Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. The number of species spotted varies from year to year but usually is close to 40. Bring binoculars and a guidebook. Bug-proof clothing is recommended. The Rotary Club of Nashoba Valley, with help from Bolton Local, will hold the next Repair Cafe Saturday, June 2, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Florence Sawyer School, 100 Mechanic Street in Bolton. Bring your clean mendable clothing, lamps, small appliances, computers and other electronics, bikes, toys, outdoor power equipment, and jewelry needing repair, and knowledgeable volunteers will help you try to fix them. They can also sharpen knives, scissors, and garden tools. No charge; you only pay for parts. If you know what parts are needed, please get them ahead of time.
